University of Victoria and High Energy Accelerator Research Organization signed a Memorandum of Understanding | Hyper-Kamiokande experiment

The University of Victoria and High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the construction of an Intermediate Water Cherenkov Detector (IWCD) for the Hyper-Kamiokande experiment, which is scheduled to start in 2027. According to the MoU, the Canadian Hyper-Kamiokande consortium is a collaboration between the University of Victoria, British Columbia Institute of Technology, University of Winnipeg, University of Regina, TRIUMF, York University, and Carleton University. The MoU includes a list of in-kind contributions from the Canadian side such as photosensor modules and a photogrammetry calibration system. The construction funds were funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation in 2021. KEK Director General Masanori Yamauchi and University of Victoria’s Associate Vice President Research Fraser Hof exchanged signatures in early November 2022.
